Saturday 10th March 2018
2pm to 4pm
Balsham Church Institute
Hello and welcome!
Thank you for visiting our website.
Thought up and run by Debbie Paton, the Balsham Community market was launched in November 2016. The butchers shop had closed earlier in the year and it was desperately missed by the village. As a consequence, Debbie decided a try running a community market to fill this void.
Debbie’s main aim in running the Balsham Community Market is to connect the local community with food producers and farmers bringing you fresh, good quality, unusual, sustainable, tasty, local, seasonal and homemade produce. This is a great opportunity to see where your food comes from and meet the farmers and producers who produce these foods.
The Balsham Community runs every second Saturday of every second month in the Balsham Church Institute. We have over 12 stalls bringing you wild game, beef, lamb, pork and beef sausages, cheese, allotment produce, mouth watering savoury foods such as sausage rolls, quiches, pork pies, vege and meat pies, steak and kidney puddings, pre-prepared meals along with melt in your mouth cheesecakes, chocolate and fudge, cupcakes and other delicious cakey things, Borakis Greek oils, olives, stuffed peppers, mountain honey, goats and sheep cheeses, artisan ice creams and sorbets as well as homemade preserves. In the summer months, we can bring you an additional food and drink stalls.
The Balsham Community Market had a trial period of 12 months to see if it would flourish and bring people together. It worked! Now it continues to run every second Saturday of every second month. The market now has a lovely community feel and is widely supported by the local community.
Keeping costs low, the market is run by a small group of volunteers. There is quite a bit of work involved in running the market. Debbie is the main organiser co-ordinating the stall holders; marketing; putting up the roadside signage; setting up the hall and many other little jobs. A small group of volunteers join her at every market to help out on the stalls: the Balsham produce; Jigsaw Bakery stall and perhaps some of the fundraising stalls.
Our lovely volunteers are not paid, they do it purely for the success of the market. Profits are ploughed back into the community via the Balsham Parchoial Charities. Last year £650 was handed over.
To find out who will be attending the next market, please take a look at Meet the Farmers and Producers.
There are many reasons to support a farmers market: great food; good value for money; supporting your local economy, farmers and food producers who are small businesses; cuts down on food mileage; you are more likely to eat seaonally; cut down on waste packaging; taking control of what you are buying and eating and more importantly helping to protect the countryside.
Café @ the Institute
The Balsham Community Market has a small café run by The Old Butchers Coffee Shop. Each market will have a different range of cakes and biscuits along with cream teas for you to enjoy.
Are you a student fundraising for a trip aboard? Are you taking part in a challenging event helping to raise awareness and fundraiser for your favourite charity? A small community table is available to you at a small cost. Please drop us an email to make contact to discuss further.
